During the last few years, data processing, computer sciences, IT and business technology have undergone a turbulent development beyond comparison. The complexity of the demands of the specialists is ever increasing. When did the computer age begin anyway? In 1614, John Napier published his famous table of logarithms and only a few years later, in 1623, Wilhelm Schickard developed the first 'computer', which was still fully mechanical. Johannes Kepler, the famous physicist and polymath, used the machine for his astronomic calculations. The binary system, i.e. the possibility to display every alphanumeric symbol with 1 and 0, was invented by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz. The age of enlightenment and the increasing influence of science, enabled Joseph-Marie Jacquard to invent punch cards in 1805. Those punch cards were able to control looms and boosted the economic development of the already flourishing textile industry even more. Later, Charles Babbage developed the important theoretic groundwork that became essential for the construction of the first, modern-day, mechanical computers. Ada Lovelace, an exceptionally intelligent, British mathematician, made history when she invented a method to program computers and thus wrote the first software. But it was still a long journey until the first super computer and all-purpose computer, ENIAC, in 1945. In 1938, Konrad Zuse, a brilliant German scientist, completed Z1. It was a programmable, but still mechanical computer. At that time, it was a quantum leap. The machine did not work very well, but was indispensable for the basic research of the following years. The 1950s marked the beginning of the production of commercial computers and the conquest of science and economy.

Meanwhile, the economic contribution of the IT sciences and services has become an indispensable factor. In all situations of life, we are accompanied by software and hardware. Mixers, cars, cell phones and thousands of products more cannot function without IT anymore. In addition, many other interdisciplinary domains have evolved from computer sciences: Informations Systems, Computational Linguistics, Bioinformatics, Chemoinformatics, Geoinformatics or Media Informatics. The so-called artificial intelligence (AI), too, is a large branch of computer sciences with strong influences from logic, linguistics, neurophysiology, cognitive psychology, sensor technologies and robotics. The extreme compression of highly specialized niche knowledge and half knowledge increases on a daily basis due to the almost unmanageable and further growing flood of information.
